Cubelets are magnetic stacking blocks with various tube connections that allow you to design your own marble run. Hoping to spark children's creativity, my team and I designed, fabricated, and field tested our product before presenting at the 2.00b final presentation.
Sketched several toy concepts based on the theme "Timeless." Initially, we downselected to three concepts (Watch Out, Finger Surfer, and Cubelets) before taking prototypes to a children's museum for field testing with children and parents alike. With these results in hand, Cubelets emerged as the best candidate due to its simple yet interactive design.
Modeled geometry of each Cubelet using Solidworks, then casted prototypes using resin. We used these prototypes to test the sizing of press-fit magnets. After reviewing our results, we decided to cast opaque foundation blocks with resin and use a resin 3D printer for the marble track blocks to achieve high transparency under our limited time constraint.
Assembled each Cubelet after treating the surfaces with sandpaper and clear coating. Each block was complete with 48 magnets (8 per side) that were covered with laser-cut acrylic slides to ensure magnets remained in place during heavy use. We then took our finalized designs back to the museum for children to build their own tracks!
After finalizing our design, we presented Cubelets to hundreds of students and professors at the "Playsentation Festival."
